My School in Stradbally

This is a story about my school, Our Lady of Mercy N.S in Stradbally. There are loads of jobs after being done to the school since I started there. The two classrooms have been painted, new floors, new sinks and new lights everywhere. We have new toilets and a new office, a lovely new floor in the hallway and display boards to display our work.
Our school is really safe. The doors close at nine-thirty and after that no one can get in unless they use the buzzer. We can see on a monitor who is at the door. In the playground there is a softplay area. You can run around and if you fall you won't get cut. On the tarmac we have pictures of snakes and a compass.

My school is a two teacher school. Mrs. Crowley teaches Junior Infants, Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd. Mr de Burca (that's my teacher) teaches 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6thclass. We do loads of fun things. We have our own vegetable patch where we plant our own vegetables. Last year the big girls did cooking with Mrs. O'Mahony. Hopefully we will be doing it this year. 5th and 6th class do French with Mrs. Crowley after school for six weeks. We also do football, drama, tin whistle, computers and buddy reading. At the moment, the builders are doing a bus bay. This will make it safer for everybody.

Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed Pompeii

Pompeii is a city in Italy. Mount Vesuvius is in Pompeii. One day the people in Pompeii realised that there was a lot of smoke coming from Mount Vesuvius. The water in the wells dried up. The next day Mount Vesuvius erupted. The very top of the mountain blew off. There was so much dust that it blocked out the sun. A lot of people in Pompeii died because their was so much dust. 2000 years later a man was digging a hole in his garden. While he was digging his shovel hit a wall. He dug deeper and he saw a house. He called the archaeologusts so they could examine it. It is now as it was 2000 years ago.
This is Zoe's picture of what happened.

Jersey Day in Stradbally

Children wore their favourite jersey for Jersey Day.

Learning about Weather

Ireland has a temperate climate. A temperate climate means that we get warm summers and cool winters. The saddest thing is that we get rain every day and almost no sun. When the air is hot it goes up. This is basically how wind is made. The wind is called after the way it blows from. The way the wind blows mostly is called the prevailing wind. It blows mostly from the south in Ireland. We measure how strong the wind is using an anemometer. About 200 years ago there was a scale called the Beaufort scale. It was invented by a man called Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort.

f1 light air
f2 a light breeze
f3 a gental breeze
f4 a moderate breeze
f5 a fresh breeze
f6 a strong breze
f7 a high wind
f8 a gale
f9 a strong gale
f10 a whole gale
f11 a storm
f12 a hurricane

The Story of Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was born in Montgomery, Alabama. In the 1950's black people were separated from white people in buses, cafés, cinemas, or schools. This upset the black people very much. One day, after Rosa Parks was finished work for the day, she got on the bus and sat down. Then the bus driver told Rosa to get off her seat to let a white person on it but Rosa said no. She said she was tired of being treated as a second class citizen.
We got this picture from a website called carribbean tales
She was arrested and all the black people boycotted the buses. The bus company was close to closing down. It lasted for 382 days and in the end segregation became illegal. Rosa Parks died in 2005 at the age of 92.
This is the bus that Rosa Parks sat in. We got this picture from Biography Online.

The Day of the Ride

It all started yesterday morning at 7:30am when I got up and got dressed. I put on my boots and headed for the farm. When we got to the farm my dad and I started feeding all the horses and ponies. We got all the horses into the walker for their exercises. Dad and I started cleaning out all the horses. I hayed all the horses for my dad. We got the ponies out and I started to brush and plait my pony. We had everything ready for the big ride. Dad got the lorry ready, we put the horses in and headed for Kilrossanty where the ride started. We trotted up and down hills for one hour and eventually we arrived at Mahon Falls. We all got our horses to rest. Sandwiches and tea were given out to all the riders. We all got ready and all headed for home. It was a long wet ride down the mountain, but it was great fun. We made it back to the lorry. The ride was over. So we loaded the ponies and headed for home to put the ponies to bed. It was the best day of my life.
