Curiosity Did NOT Kill the Cat

Lasy Monday I went into school and my teacher said to the class that Little Red Kettle is coming on Wednesday. I was so excited. Everyone was excited because we all love Little Red Kettle. They have come to our school every year for the past four years. I don't know why they called it Little Red Kettle. It has nothing to do with a red kettle. They put on a show for us and we got to be in the show. We would put up our hand to be in the show and they would pick a few people and dress them up. For example I was a person from the Stone Age, Tara was a dog's brain and Emily was a cat's brain. I know it sounds weird but the show was really funny. The show was about curiosity. If the cave men / women weren't curious about making...lets just say making houses, they would still be in caves and if hadn't been for cave people and I wouldn't be writing this. Stone Age people invented writing, music and art. Anyway we had lots of fun; even the teachers had fun. There were 4 people who set this play up. Their names were Joe, Nick, Lisa and Clare and they called up my teacher to be an old woman. He had to put on a curly grey wig. It was SO funny!!!
Picture below shows Stone age woman (Caroline), Professor Hildebroom von Hinkle-Shtinkle, Sir Isaac Newton, Christopher Columbus,Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Curious Joe, Nicholas Copernicus, William Shakespeare and Gallileo Gallilei.

Science In Stradbally

We had our Science Day on the 15th of April, this year. All of the pupils in the school had projects to work on to make this day spectacular. Mrs Crowey’s students, ( Juniors and Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd class) Worked on their science projects and it was all on display down in their classroom on the day. Mr de Burca’s students (3rd to 6th class), also did science projects and their experiments were being done in their classroom and posters were displayed everywhere! People came into the school to see all these experiments and projects. The local schools of Stradbally came too. There were some amazing experiments like: The erupting Volcano, The red cabbage experiment, Creeping Colours, Salt Water and Normal Water showing that eggs can float in one and not the other, and many more things. The teachers took pictures and the students made descriptions of their projects and they were all sent off in a folder. There will be people judging the work and looking at it and if they think the school has done a lot of good work and interesting experiments, we may get the science award.. Again! Which the school would be honoured to have! We hope everybody had a fantastic day as all of our teachers and pupils did!

Science in Stradbally

Find your pulse on the inside of your wrist below your thumb. Place a piece of blue-tac or plasticine on this point and push one end of a drinking straw into the blue-tac/plasticine so that it stands upright from your wrist. Lay your arm flat on the table. If you keep your arm very still, you may notice the straw rocking backwards and slightly as the blood pumped by your heart passes through your wrist. If you have a watch, you or your friend can count the number of times the straw rocks on one minute.

Make your own set of teeth.

Making your own set of teeth is easy. All you need is an apple, plastacine, a sheet of white paper, a mirror and a pencil. You need the paper and pencil to draw your teeth. The mirror is for you to trace your teeth. Well all you need to do with the apple is bite into it to see what teeth you use for biting and chewing. We made own. It turned out realy good so you try and make your own set of teeth.

Science Pops in Stradbally

It was a Monday when I saw the experiment on television. It was on a programme called "When Science Pops". Then on Friday, having asked the teacher, I did it in school for the class. What you need for it is:
  • a small glass bottle
  • two small birthday candles
  • a hard-boiled egg
  • some matches
Hard Boiled Egg Explosion

First you peel the egg and stick the candles in the egg. Now you light the candles and put the glass over them. Then the egg started to suck up and soon it exploded by being sucked into the bottle. It is important that the neck of the bottle is NARROWER than the egg. We all got a fright and thought that it would work. If you want to give it a go make sure you have an adult with you..!!!

Our Lady of Mercy Visit W.I.T.

About two eeeks ago we went to Waterford Institute of Technology. It was a big college. We left the school at 8.30am. nice and early. We learned all about colour. The lady showed us all experiments and she was highly intelligent. We got into groups. Here are all the groups:
Group 1: Anna, Taylor, Sarah and Kate.
Group 2: Abby, Rachael, Kayleigh and Chloe
Group 3: Natasha, Louise and Rebekah.
Group 4: Clodagh, Áine and Katelynn.
Group 5: Tara, Emily, Sheena and Zoe.

We did some experiments and here they are:
  1. We dipped black paper in water with clear nail varnish and all the colours of the rainbow came on to the black paper.
  2. We got cabbage juice, bread soda and mouthwash. We dipped special paper into each of them. If you pick mouthwash you get a base and if you pick bread soda you get an acid.
  3. We got crepe paper, two markers and drew a picture. After a short while we put the paper in water and the colours blurred.
  4. We got a bowl of milk, washing up liquid and a sucker. We then got colour dye. We got the sucker and put dye in each corner of the milk. We put washing up liquid in the bowl and all the colours came together.
My favourite part was number 3. Posted by A.D, Senior Classes
